The Events

Friday, April 17th

2 p.m. A group walk of the First Avenue Trail in Council Bluffs starting at 2:15 p.m. from the separate south parking area of Hy-Vee, 2323 West Broadway, Council Bluffs. The trail is rated 1A, suited for strollers and walkers. Enjoy murals, landscaping and a quiet stroll in the heart of the city. This walk qualifies for AVA/IVV Credit and these Special Programs: Anniversaries Hurrah! Par for the Course, Rails-to-Trails, Step to the Beat. The fee is $4 per walker.

A 10 km route with a 5 km option will be available.

Saturday, April 18th

9 a.m. to 11 a.m., off the trail by 1 p.m. A Traditional Walk spanning both sides of the Missouri River, starting from the Rivers Edge Pavilion, 4250 Rivers Edge Pkwy, Council Bluffs, IA 51501. Explore the new Treetop Walk before crossing the Mighty Mo by way of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to Omaha’s vibrant RiverFront area. This walk qualifies for AVA/IVV Credit and these Special Programs: Anniversaries Hurrah! Par for the Course, Rails-to-Trails, Step to the Beat. The fee is $4 per walker.

A group walk will be offered at 9:30 a.m.

A 10 km route with a 5 km option will be available.

Saturday, April 18th

2 p.m. Explore local history and the history of westward expansion with two guided museum tours. This is a $21 value offered for only $5!

The Squirrel Cage Jail is a unique 3-story rotary jail, designed for maximum security with minimal staff. Intriguing architecture and haunting stories.

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum is housed in a former Carnegie Library, showcasing 150 years of our nation’s history of westward expansion.

Sunday, April 19th

10 a.m. Group walk of Nebraska City, Nebraska, starting from Steinhart Park, 121 Steinhart Park Rd, Nebraska City, NE 68410 and look for the signs. We’ll be carpooling from the Omaha and Council Bluffs areas so that we arrive by 9:45 a.m. to complete paperwork. Home of Arbor Day, Nebraska City will be in bloom as you walk through tree-lined streets downtown. Also on the route will be the Arbor Day Farm, the Lied Lodge and its wooded trails, and Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, the setting for the mansion of J. Sterling Morton. This walk qualifies for AVA/IVV Credit and these Special Programs: Anniversaries Hurrah!, Par for the Course, Step to the Beat, Walking with America’s Veterans. The fee is $4 per walker.

Carpooling will be available from the Council Bluffs/Omaha area.

A 10 km route with a 5 km option will be available.

Saturday After-walk Lunch & Cake – 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

We’ll be finalizing our food truck options as we get closer to our April 18th walk date, so be sure to check back here to see what will be available.

We’ll be serving cake as part of this 50th Anniversary Celebration, so plan to bring your lunch inside and enjoy a piece of cake to go with your lunch.
