Ready for our last two walks of 2014?

We’re busy gearing up for our next two walks, both coming up in December.

Our annual Lights Walk will be held December 6th, starting at 4 p.m. from the Landmark Building at 12th and Farnam in downtown Omaha.

Our once-in-a-lifetime (well, this author’s lifetime) Time to Walk! event will take place December 13th, with registration between 9 and 9:30 a.m. at the Fremont Hy-Vee and everyone should be walking by 10:11 a.m. on 12/13/14.A special thank you to Hy-Vee for providing coffee and donuts for registered walkers!

“But it’s cold!” you’re saying to yourself. Well, here’s a link to one of many articles out there about how to dress for cold weather walking: How to Dress for Cold Weather Walking

Want to read more about the events themselves? Check out our Events page and a nice article about the excitement being generated by the Time to Walk! event. here: 10-11-12-13-14 – Time to Walk

Musings and news from our Grand Island members

Some of you know Jim and Martha McGahan from the Mid-Nebraska Trail Seekers. That club became inactive last year, but that doesn’t mean that the walkers from that club slowed down! Jim edited an AVA-award-winning newsletter for the club and many asked, “But how can we go without brilliant commentary attached to the faces of those we know, from those MNTS newsletters?”

Well, ask and you shall receive!  Here are two of the most recent collections for your reading pleasure. Jim has promised to put together his own pictorial take on the recently completed Pie Walk in Blair just a couple of weeks (and 40 degrees of temperature!) ago.

South Dakota 125th Anniversary Walks

Jim also has a great collection of reminiscences of the Lincoln Highway walks that he organized across Nebraska, with grand celebrations of the 100th Anniversary of the Lincoln Highway in Fremont, Grand Island and Kearney. Anyone interested in seeing those and not on the email list can contact us and we will forward those on.

Or, contact us, and we’ll get you on the email list so that you don’t have to wait to get the NWFT newsletter OR Jim’s photo essays!

Beautiful Bellevue Walk

What a wonderful fall day for walking! We had 74 walkers join us for the “Beautiful Belleuve Walk”, including 14 new faces. Here’s a picture of 2 of them, with “old face” Butch Spaulding.  The Luciers are veteran Volksmarchers from living in Germany, and we welcome them, and the 12 other folks new to our walks. Just think – our next walk also starts with a “B” – in Blair, with the added bonus of PIE to sweeten the deal.

Walks from Around the Area

Just a reminder for those of you with a little wanderlust in your hearts and some gas in your tanks – other clubs offer great Volksmarches (and swimming, and bicycling, and skiing) as one day and multiple day events.  Four club members made the trek to the Black Hills Volkssport Association’s 2-day Fall Volksmarch at the Crazy Horse Memorial in (where else?) the Black Hills outside of Custer and Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota.  Our new club t-shirts sure stand out from the rest of the crowd, don’t they?

Our newsletters try to include other events within a reasonable driving distance of the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro, so be sure to look there for other great walking opportunities. Bi-monthly newsletters are posted on this website, so if you’re not getting the newsletter emailed to you, look there, and/or send us a note via the “Contact Us” page to be added to our newsletter distribution list.  If you’re into Facebook, members of the American Volkssport Association’s Group page on Facebook like to promote events there, for trips just a little further abroad. DSC00334

Wine and Walk Updates

A few updates on our upcoming Wine and Walk on September 6th:

  1. Worker’s Walk is at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 23rd. Come a few minutes early to handle paperwork and payment. No bathrooms are available at the Start Point, so factor that in to your timing. There are gas stations nearby.
  2. On the day of the actual walk, Too Far North Winery has donated two bottles of wine for us to give away to two lucky walkers (of legal drinking age). Just pull the lucky cork from the basket and a bottle of wine is yours to take home and enjoy!
  3. Fort Atkinson will have reenactments beginning at 10 a.m. and our walk route goes through the Fort. Plan to spend extra time on the route to enjoy seeing scenes from daily life 150 years ago, or re-enter the Fort after the walk with your Nebraska State Parks sticker.
  4. The walk will pass the Washington County Museum and the Frahm House. A special price of $4 allows our walkers to enter both buildings, starting at noon.
