MAY – JUNE 2019 NEWSLETTER

Our latest newsletter is attached here: May – June 2019 Newsletter

As always, club members get the full version of the newsletter delivered to their inboxes. Not a club member? Stop by any walk or meeting to find out more and to sign up, or check this out.

As mentioned in the newsletter, we’ve reserved tickets to the Omaha Storm Chasers for a 2:05 p.m. game on Sunday, July 28th at Werner Park in Omaha. We have a limited number of tickets – get yours today! $11 for a club member, $16 for non-club members. (Did we mention how to become a club member?) Time’s ticking: mail in your payment by May 3rd or bring it to the club meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6th at Morning Star Lutheran Church at 331 S. 85th Avenue in Omaha.

Not mentioned in the newsletter: Our Workers’ Walk for the May 11th Walk starting at the Sarpy County Museum at 2402 Clay Street in Bellevue. When is it? Sunday, May 5th, with feet hitting the trail at 2 p.m., so be sure to be there 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork. Speaking of paperwork, restrooms will NOT be available at the Museum. If you didn’t see the email to sign up as a volunteer for this walk and want to volunteer, let us know at netrailblazers@gmail.com and we’ll pass on the message!

March – April 2019 Newsletter

Our March-April 2019 newsletter is now available in edited form. (Remember that Club Members get the full version, hot off the presses!) Our thanks to Sandy Spaulding for stepping into Footsteps‘ editor Julie Brown’s shoes for this issue!

Donated soup

Our annual Soup Walk was postponed a week – from March 2nd to March 9th, because of forecasted adverse weather. Well, it looks like the warm-up we were hoping for is going to be delayed. So, how do we cope? With the 3 W’s and plenty of hot soup!

What are the 3 W’s? It’s how to dress for exercise in cold weather!

  • Wicking – base layer should move body moisture away from the body. Think a lightweight wool, silk or a synthetic fabric – not cotton, which traps moisture.
  • Warmth – next layer should help to retain heat. Think sweaters, fleece, down, heavier wool.
  • Weather – the outside layer should repel moisture and stop wind. It should also be breathable, to allow body moisture to evaporate, rather than be trapped inside and chilling you.

A quick Google search “layering clothes for cold weather” gives lots of examples and tips. One good search result is from Mountain Warehouse, which provides text, pictures and a video.

November 2018

We just finished our Pie Walk on November 3rd and are getting ready for our Night of Lights Walk on December 2nd.  We’re busy at work planning our 2019 walks, starting in March with our annual Soup Walk at Children’s Square in Council Bluffs – more info coming in January about our 2019 season!

In the meantime, we have the November-December 2018 newsletter available.  Remember that club members receive the full newsletter directly as an email.

Our next walk is a Meet and Eat (group walk) on Friday, November 23rd at 10 a.m., starting from the Lansky’s at 1131 N Broadway, Council Bluffs, IA 51503. The plan is to #OptOutside and walk the 5k, then return to Lansky’s for lunch.  Lansky’s is the Start Point for our Council Bluffs Year Round Event and specializes in pizza, cheese steaks and pasta.

Our November club meeting featured a speaker from the Omaha Bee Club, a short business meeting and was followed by refreshments.  We do provide an orientation to visitors and new club members during the refreshments.  Here are scenes from that meeting. [rl_gallery id=”1456″]

September – October 2018 Newsletter

Our latest newsletter is available here.  As fall approaches, the pace of our walking season picks up. Check out all of the walking opportunities at home and nearby in the “Mark Your Calendars” section of the newsletter.

Just a reminder, our “Discover Small Town Nebraska” walks take place October 5th – 7th in Brownville, Falls City, Pawnee City and Tecumseh.  We’re asking for pre-registrations to help with our planning, although we do welcome walkers who make last-minute plans to be with us.  Check out our “Discover Small Town Nebraska” section of this website and then be sure to send in your registrations by September 4th.

May – June 2018 Newsletter

The May-June 2018 newsletter is available here:  NWFT May-June 2018 newsletter   You’ll find club news, photos and a list of upcoming events.

Note for those coming to the Bird Seeds to Trails Workers’ Walk on Saturday, April 28th at 2 p.m. and for the walk itself on Saturday, May 12th from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.: It’s not quite so easy to get there.  The best route suggested from the east is to use Q St. from 144th  Street.  Or use 168th Street north  from Hwy 370 to the start point shopping center. Harrison west from 144th will remain closed all summer – so don’t go that way!
